Coming out of the Oktoberfest season, I wanted to brew something for the Fall season. I thought that an amber ale would fit the bill - nothing fancy...just some nice maltiness balanced by some hoppy tropical notes.
I did some research on-line and came across this recipe from one of my favorite Craft Beer & Brewing contributors, Josh Weikert: https://beerandbrewing.com/make-your-best-american-amber-ale/
I tweaked the recipe a bit and bypassed the chocolate malt to avoid any roasty notes. But then I accidentally let the first hop addition go for 30 minutes instead of 20 and this took the IBUs from 28 to 43! I guess I brewed a red IPA instead!
I cold crashed this and let it condition for over a week but it still looks a bit hazy. Color was a bit more orange than amber but I actually really like how it turned out! Not sure what to call it - maybe a hazy orange IPA? Anyway, this tastes much better than expected. Lots of great nutty malt flavors from the maris otter, but then tropical notes from the Citra and Amarillo. Still not sure why it stayed a bit hazy, but I am really liking this beer for the fall season. Prost!
Wow very interesting end result. The color is very nice, would love to try it
