It will be interesting to see which one gives a richer "barrel" character....
Turns out the bourbon really was a good option. In my opinion it makes a more smooth and complex finish with a slightly woody, sweet edge. Very delicious and great for fall. In fact (as my brother suggested) this may be a great base recipe for a Christmas ale too, albeit a bit lighter than the usual stout or strong ale :)
